The idea behind The Marine Sauna was born on Midsummer’s Eve 2001 in a homemade cabin on a barely floating old wooden pier on a small lake in Sörmland. Against a blackened wall stood the welded oven and frizzled when the water was poured over the grey stones.
Despite the somewhat defective construction, it was a marvellous experience! The feeling of taking a sauna bath floating on the lake, the flickering gleam from the open fire and the proximity to the cooling water was something very special. Heat, chilliness, vapour, fire flames, warm wood, seawater and Swedish summer night in perfect harmony.
It was a genuine sauna experience, essentially different from the bone dry, electrically illuminated and heated saunas with shower that are so common in Sweden nowadays.
The idea that was born was to design a high quality, floating, wood heated sauna following old Nordic traditions. It should be fire proof, seaworthy and easy to maintain, and also aesthetically appealing.
In the Fall of 2003 the project started to take shape. Together with two architects and a Finnish sauna-guru, a model was designed in a 1:20 scale. Planning mills and carpentries were chosen carefully on the premises that they should possess solid professionalism and share our passion for the idea of a floating, wood heated sauna.
Considerable effort was made to make the interior measures as ideal as possible with regards to heat, ventilation, humidity, fireproofness and comfort. The Marine Saunas was equipped with panoramic double glass window, generous opening in the floor for bathing and benches that could easily be stowed away or arranged to be used as a bed when the sauna is used as a boathouse or a floating guesthouse.
Eventually, in the late summer of 2005, the company Nordic Marine Sauna AB was founded by two brothers, Björn and Mats Elzén, introducing to the market six models of Marine Saunas. Our vision is to enable as many as possible to share the wonderful Midsummer experience that triggered the creation of Nordic Marine Sauna AB!
